LED (Light Emitting Diode) Skin Rejuvenation

LED Skin Rejuvenation is an FDA approved method to rejuvenate the skin.  It was developed by NASA in the 1980s to improve healing of wounds and tissue growth in space.  According to NASA it uses 100% safe wavelengths. It stimulates cells, increases circulation and promotes collagen growth.  It is a painless, non-invasive treatment that energizes cells, stimulates collagen and elastin, and gives the skin back its youthful look.  The Skin You’re In offers this treatment as an adjunct to any facial or as a stand-alone treatment.  Our LED equipment has four different wavelengths of color: Red, Yellow, Green and Blue.  Each color has properties that yields different results from reducing wrinkles and fine lines, toning and strengthening muscles, improving blood flow and increasing collagen production, calming and reducing inflammation and hyper-pigmentation to purifying with anti-bacterial properties to kill acne causing bacteria thereby treating mild to moderate acne.  It is a safe, non-toxic method to improve the condition of the skin. The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology reports that phototherapy with visible light, specifically blue light, has been shown to improve skin condition in cases of acne and blemishes. In fact, it has been shown to control the condition before the breakout begins. NASA's studies have shown that cells that have been exposed to LED Light Therapy have a 150% enhancement to their cellular metabolism, thereby accelerating the repair and replenishment of damaged cells.

What is a LED Skin Rejuvenation?

It is a technology based skin treatment that uses specific wavelengths of natural light energy to restore skin’s normal, healthy activity. Different color wavelengths produce different results from reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, toning and strengthening muscles, killing the p-acne bacteria that causes acne breakouts to reducing inflammation and hyper-pigmentation

Are there any contraindications for LED Skin Rejuvenation?

Tell your Skin Therapist if your skin’s photosensitivity is compromised due to use of prescription strength retinoids like Retin-A or Accutane. Before starting LED, your Skin Therapist will take a brief history and will ask questions about specific conditions, like hypothyroidism or bipolar disorder that may contraindicate the treatment.  It is not recommended for individuals with seizure disorders, who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, who have a photo-allergy, or who are taking medications that cause light sensitivity (such as Tetracycline). Also, if you are currently taking steroids or cortisone injections, you should not receive light therapy.  LED has been shown to be quite effective on most people who use it regularly and as directed, and there have been very few reported side effects. While almost everyone can benefit from the use of light therapy, these treatments will have the greatest impact on skin with sluggish metabolism and slow cellular activity showing visible signs of aging.  However, like most treatments, it won’t necessarily work the same for everyone. It may sound too good to be true, but as of now, there has not been evidence showing adverse effects.

How many LED Skin Rejuvenation Treatments will I need to get the desired effect?

The skin looks different after the first treatment: smoother and more hydrated with a natural radiant glow.  However, since the device is essentially stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms, the most visible results are not immediate.  Instead, results occur gradually over several weeks.   With each treatment you will see improvement.  An effective home care regimen will be recommended by your Skin Therapist that will further enhance your results. Generally, 6 to 15 visits are recommended. Biweekly appointments are the norm initially. We will develop an individualized treatment program for you when you come in. It is beneficial to book monthly maintenance sessions after your initial course has run out, as your skin will still continue to age.

What is the length of time for the treatment?

As a stand-alone service, your visit you should plan on 60 minutes and 45 minutes for subsequent visits. This includes the time to prepare for the treatment. If you are combining the LED Skin Rejuvenation with a Signature Customized Skin Treatment plan on an hour and 15 minutes. It is recommended that your maintenance treatments be done at the same time as your normal facial appointment and this can be done within an hour and 15 minutes for that treatment.

Can I put my make-up back on immediately?

Yes, there is no downtime with this treatment.

Is there proof that this technology works?

Clinical studies, scientific and medical research, independent testing and patient testimonials exist to prove the efficacy of Light-Therapy.  Research conducted by NASA’s space program has proven that near-infrared LED light therapy promotes wound healing and human tissue growth.

Do I need maintenance treatments?

Yes.  Maintenance treatments are important in order to maintain your visible results.  Usually a once a month treatment is recommended, unless otherwise determined by your Skin Therapist. Unfortunately, the clock doesn’t stop ticking just because we had Skin Rejuvenation Treatments.

Are there any skin types that shouldn’t receive LED Skin Rejuvenation?

LED Skin Rejuvenation has benefits for all skin types so it doesn’t matter if you are fair or dark complected, have oily skin or dry skin there is an LED Skin Rejuvenation Treatment right for you.

Is LED Skin Rejuvenation compatible with other skin treatments?

Are there any products I can use to enhance my LED Light Therapy Treatment?

We strongly recommend that you use a professional skin regimen from Dermalogica prescribed by your Skin Therapist.  In addition, the Bio-Therapeutic Product System is specifically formulated to enhance LED applications as well as maintain firmer, younger looking skin when used daily.  These products can be used in conjunction with Dermalogica products.  Your Skin Therapist can provide you with a recommended regimen.

Is there equipment for home use, and if so, why should I have LED Skin Rejuvenation done at The Skin You’re In?

Yes, there are home use products on the market; however, you have to be very careful that you are purchasing a quality product. There are a lot of gimmicks out there. LED is a very big trend right now that a lot of cosmetic companies are capitalizing on. These units come in different strengths and different price ranges, and it is very hard to know exactly what you are buying. The LED Skin Rejuvenation equipment used at The Skin You’re In has a panel of nearly 3000 individual lights for maximum and consistent coverage of the face, neck, and décolleté. A licensed Skin Therapist who is trained to analyze your skin and knowledgeable about LED therapy will be able to properly analyze your skin to determine which LED lights are most appropriate for your current skin condition and can often adjust the strength and dosage (time) of the lights as you start seeing results and your goals progress. Your Skin Therapist will also utilize professional products that will enhance the benefits of the LED application. Although LED light therapy is very safe when provided by a Skin Therapist, like anything else, bad things can happen if it is misused.
